The History of the Church

Founded in 1892 with 50 charter members from Clinton Frame Mennonite Church, Silver Street Mennonite Church grew rapidly to 200 members by the turn of the century.  By 1913 Silver Street had planted two churches:  Topeka Mennonite and Eighth Street Mennonite.   The congregation was known for supporting Mennonite mission work overseas.   Attendance gradually declined since the 1940s to 40 in 1980.  In 1983 the church moved from its rural location four miles east of Goshen.  In 1984 a new meeting place was built in a developing residential area on the west side of Goshen.  The name was changed to Silverwood Mennonite and the congregation again experienced rapid growth to 300.  Silverwood is a member congregation of Central District Conference and Mennonite Church USA .
