Silverwood has fielded softball teams (fast-pitch, coed
slow-pitch, and men's slow-pitch) since the mid-80's. Currently, the slow-pitch
team plays at Shanklin Park in Goshen during the summer and participates in the
Mennonite Open tournament in Fort Wayne over Labor Day weekend. For the past
couple of years, CS Electric has sponsored the team. The Woodies had an
outstanding season in 2006, going 17-3 and winning the D division, league, and
tournament crowns. Instead of adding more trophies to their already impressive
display, the team members received a t-shirt for each championship. Everyone is
welcome to play.
Basketball
Silverwood has many former high school and college basketball
players in attendance. Although we have formed up to four teams in the past, we
currently have an "A" team and a "B" team playing Saturday mornings at the
Elkhart Sports Center just off of CR 17. The "A" team's run of a number of
undefeated seasons came to an end last year, but the "B" team picked up the
mantle by finishing first in their league. The church has participated in the
Mennonite league since the early 1980's, formerly playing games at Bethany
Christian HS. Inviting new attenders to play has been a great way to
incorporate them into the life of the church body, and playing together has been
helpful in getting to know each other better.
